Three families of commodities

Commodities are raw materials with a world price and standard grades. Each family has its own drivers — and behaves differently from stocks.

Energy

Crude oil, natural gas, coal and power — driven by global growth, geopolitics and the energy transition.

Metals

Gold and silver as money and safe haven; copper, aluminium, nickel and zinc for industry; battery metals for the future.

Agriculture

Grains, oilseeds and softs — rice, coffee, sugar, cocoa, rubber — where Vietnam is a leading exporter.

How it works

Where commodity returns come from

Most investors hold commodities through futures. Their return has three parts — understanding them is the key to investing well.

1

Spot return

The change in the price of the commodity itself: supply, demand, inventories and cost curves.

2

Roll return

Gained or lost when an expiring futures contract is replaced by the next one — positive in backwardation, negative in contango.

3

Collateral return

The interest earned on the cash that backs the futures position.

Invest

Ways to invest

From one trade to a diversified portfolio: choose the exposure that fits your goals, horizon and risk.

Indexes

Rule-based commodity indexes measure the market and serve as benchmarks — like the NXW Gold Plus index, rebalanced monthly.

Funds, ETFs and ETCs

Exposure to a commodity or a basket with a single trade, without handling futures.

Futures and options

Direct exposure, hedging and income strategies — with leverage and the roll to manage.

Commodity equities

Producers, miners and agribusiness companies listed in Vietnam, Asia and worldwide.

Physical assets

Gold bars, storage and farmland: owning the real thing.

In a portfolio

Diversification and inflation protection — sized carefully, because commodities are volatile.
